Using Tapestry in Specialist Learning Spaces within Mainstream Schools

by Stephen on February 19

Whether they are labelled Resourced Provisions, Resource Bases, SRPS or ARPS, there has been a huge proliferation of specialist learning spaces being set up within mainstream primary schools to support learners who have increasingly complex learning differences.

At Tapestry, we have seen a large rise in requests for accounts to be used in these spaces - mainly due to our Cherry Garden framework and the ability to upload EHCP outcomes to support assessment and monitoring processes.

The Cherry Garden framework lends itself to these environments because it was designed to be used for children with complex support needs who are working below National Curriculum expectations. In addition, Cherry Garden school, where the framework was created, operates a fully play-based learning environment which is often mirrored in Resourced Provisions.

The six main Branch Maps on which the framework is based can be printed out and used to enable discussions about children’s learning levels, whilst also supporting conversations about appropriate ‘next steps’. The ability to then attach milestones from the Branch Maps into Tapestry observations means that a fuller picture of a child’s learning and progress can be painted. The Branch Maps can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

The framework contains a unique Cherry Orchard graphic which engages families and helps support a deeper understanding of a child’s development.

The Cherry Garden Monitoring Screen is the ideal place to bring your assessments together and make judgements about how well a child is engaging with the provision. Opportunities to reflect on these judgements allow educators to detail enhancements and adjustments that they will make. The screen provides the opportunity to tell the story of a child’s progress, but also importantly how the input from the team has enabled learning.

SEND Advisor and Outreach Teacher

Stephen worked in mainstream for the first four years of his career before moving to Cherry Garden School in London where he was Early Years lead and Deputy Headteacher. Cherry Garden is a school for children with severe and complex support needs, and Stephen was based there for 11 years before joining the FSF in September 2019 as our SEND Advisor. He now lives in the North East where he visits nurseries and schools to offer free support, and he shares the Branch Maps that he worked on developing at Cherry Garden. These are now part of the Tapestry assessment system.
